Manual Excel reports
Context
The company is an industrial distribution and logistics operation with multiple business units (sales, operations, finance, logistics, and executive leadership). Each unit generated its own reports, in its own format, at its own pace.
The challenge
- Leadership made decisions with data that was already a week old
- Each department maintained separate Excel files with numbers that didn’t match
- Generating a consolidated report required a technical resource and days of manual work
- No self-service capability: every data request became a bottleneck
- Strategic questions went unanswered because nobody could pull the data fast enough
The solution
Data modeling and star schema
Designed a dimensional model connecting all business data sources (ERP, CRM, logistics systems, financial records) into a unified star schema optimized for analytical queries.
Automated ETL pipeline
Built an automated extract-transform-load pipeline that refreshes data from every source system. No manual extractions, no copy-paste, no stale data.
Tactical operational dashboards
Created department-specific dashboards for daily operations:
- Sales: revenue tracking, margins, pipeline, rep performance
- Operations: productivity metrics, cycle times, bottleneck identification
- Finance: cash flow, receivables/payables, budget variance analysis
- Logistics: delivery performance, carrier costs, route optimization data
Strategic executive scorecards
Built consolidated executive dashboards with balanced scorecards, cross-department KPIs, and trend analysis for strategic decision-making.
Role-based security
Implemented row-level security so each user sees only the data relevant to their role and business unit.
Results
- Every business unit has real-time visibility into their operations
- Decision-making went from waiting a week for a report to 5 minutes of self-service exploration
- All manual recurring Excel reports eliminated
- Single source of truth across the entire organization
